The Mountain Is Closed???

We arrived in Tahoe late Wednesday night. The Stardust Lodge is the PERFECT place to call home for the next few days. A tiny 1-bedroom (with a fold down bed), TV, mini-fridge, heater, and bathroom is just perfect. We woke up Thursday SO EXCITED to ski. Our little lodge is within walking distance to the gondola (nice planning Andrew) so when we reached the gondola at 8:30 and it wasn’t moving, we got a little confused. Apparently, when storms come in here, its normal for them to close down part (or in this case LOTS) of the mountain. We found out that about 3/4 of the mountain would be closed due to wind!!!! WHAT??? Honey, we’re not in Colorado anymore!

I tried not get get too bummed and thankfully my super optimistic husband took me on a coffee date to cheer me up and make a new plan. We did end up traveling to the 1/4 of the mountain that was open. I am so glad we did! The mountain of Heavenly has got to be one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. It doesn’t even take a full ski lift to get the breathtaking view of the lake from the mountain. It was a little cloudy but that still didn’t keep the view from incredible! There were only 3 lifts open, and EVERYONE who wanted to ski was on those 3 lifts…. The crowds were big and the runs short so we got a few in and then decided to stop by a lounge, warm up, and enjoy the scenery.

After a large mountain lunch, we went down to enjoy the town for the rest of the afternoon. South Lake Tahoe has all sorts of casinos so we managed to find the 19th floor of Harvey’s for happy hour and incredible views of the lake and the mountain.

The storm comes in tonight so I am really hoping the winds calm down and the mountain opens up tomorrow!
